  60. Digital Audio        =    Recorded sounds, usually speech and sound 
  61.                 effects.  These sounds are produced by the 
  62.                 Digital-To-Analog Converter (DAC) on the PAS16.
  63.                 WIN31 uses the file extension .WAV for digital
  64.                 audio.
  65. Synthesized Audio      =    FM sounds, usually music but can also be used 
  66.                 to produce speech and sound effects.  These 
  67.                 sounds are produced by the FM Synthesizer on 
  68.                 the PAS16.  WIN31 uses the file extension .MID

  130. The PAS16 sound card uses two sets of DMAs and IRQs.  See the default settings 
  131. in sections below.
  132. Does not support hardware compression.
  133. SB's DAC supports hardware decompression (2:1,3:1,4:1).   PAS16's DAC does not
  134. support this.
  135. No hardware support for MPU-401.
  136. Has built-in SCSI CD-ROM interface.
  137. The card measures 7 7/8" and 3 7/8" and requires a 16-bit slot.
  138. The LINE IN and LINE OUT are 1/8-inch stereo jacks.  Supported speakers are 
  139. 4-ohm or 8-ohm speakers, self-amplified speakers are optional
  140. The MIC IN is 1/8-inch mono jack.  Supported microphones are 600 to 10K ohm 
  141. dynamic.
  142. The Internal CD-Audio Connector at J5 is a 5-pin header connector, 0.100" 
  143. space header, pin 1=ground, 2=right in, 3=ground, 4=left in, 5=ground.

  206. 1.    Reduce to the generic CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  207. 2.    Reduce the computer's CPU speed.  Usually this can be accomplished by 
  208.     turning off the TURBO mode or disabling the internal/external memory 
  209.     cache by going into the computer's CMOS setup.
  210. 3.    Reduce the computer's bus (I/O CLK) speed to 8MHz.  The PAS16 was 
  211.     designed around the IBM AT specification which uses this bus speed.  
  212.     Please note that this is not the same as the CPU speed.  Once 
  213.     everything works fine at 8MHz bus speed, you can experiment at a 
  214.     higher bus speed.
  215. 4.    Remove other peripheral boards from the computer, such as scanner 
  216.     board, tape backup,...
  217. 5.    Try the PAS16 in another 16-bit slot.
  218. 6.    Try the PAS16 in another computer.
  219. 7.    If you do not hear any sound, recheck the speakers/headphones 
  220.     connections.
  221.  
  222. *************************PAS16 HARDWARE INSTALLATION*************************
  223. 1.    Q:    Do I have to change any jumpers before I install the PAS16?
  224.     A:    The default settings will work in most computers.  Only try 
  225.         with different IRQ (at jumper J12) and I/O port (at J10) 
  226.         settings if you experience any problems or know that these 
  227.         settings are used by another peripheral board in the same 
  228.         system.
  229.  
  230. 2.    Q:    How do I change the DMA and IRQ settings for the PAS16 section
  231.         of the sound card?  
  232.     A:    The PAS16's DMA and IRQ can be changed by changing the D:x and
  233.         Q:x parameter on the MVSOUND.SYS statement in the CONFIG.SYS 
  234.         file.
  235.  
  236. 3.    Q:    How do I change the IRQ and I/O port settings for the SB 
  237.         section of the sound card?
  238.     A:    The SB's IRQ and I/O port can be changed by changing the 
  239.         jumpers at J12 and J10 on the sound card.  
  240.  
  241. 4.    Q:    Can the PAS16 section and the SB section share the same 
  242.         settings?
  243.     A:    No.  The settings must be different to prevent a DMA and IRQ 
  244.         conflict.
  245.  
  246. 5.    Q:    What are the symptoms of a DMA and IRQ conflict on the PAS16 
  247.         section?
  248.     A:    DMA conflict causes digital audio to be distorted or no digital
  249.         audio.  It can also cause system to hang, reboot, or issue 
  250.         parity error.
  251.         IRQ conflict causes digital audio to loop and no synthesized 
  252.         audio.  
  253.  
  254. 6.    Q:    What are the symptoms of  an IRQ and I/O port conflict on the 
  255.         SB section?
  256.     A:    The game does not produce digital audio or digital audio is 
  257.         distorted, or, running the game causes the computer to lock up.
  258.  
  259. 7.    Q:    What causes a Memory Parity Error?
  260.     A:    A DMA conflict.
  261.  
  262. 8.    Q:    Which jumpers on the sound card can I change?
  263.     A:    The only ones that can be changed are the SB jumpers:  J10 for
  264.         I/O port, J11 for DMA 1, and J12 for I/O port.  
  265.  
  266. 9.    Q:    How do I disable SB compatibility mode?
  267.     A:    Float all of the shunts for J10, J11 and J12 (by putting the 
  268.         shunt on 1 pin only).  This will disable the SB's IRQ, I/O 
  269.         port and DMA 1.  
  270.  
  271. 10.    Q:    Does the PAS16 work in a 486/50, or, What computers does the 
  272.         PAS16 work in?
  273.     A:    The PAS16 was designed around the IBM AT specification.  It 
  274.         will work in a 486/50 if the bus (I/O CLK) speed is lowered 
  275.         down to 8MHz.  Please note that this is not the same as the 
  276.         CPU speed.  Once it works fine at 8MHz bus speed, you can 
  277.         experiment at a higher bus speed.
  278.  
  279. **************************PAS16 SOFTWARE INSTALLATION************************
  280. 1.    Q:    How much disk space is needed to load all the files on the 
  281.         hard drive?
  282.     A:    About 5-6MB.  
  283.  
  284. 2.    Q:    What drivers can be loaded high?
  285.     A:    If there is sufficient upper memory available, you can load 
  286.         MVSOUND.SYS, TSLCDR.SYS and MSCDEX.EXE high.
  287.  
  288. 3.    Q:    I have just received a new version of the PAS16 Installation 
  289.         Disks.  Can I install it over the old version?
  290.     A:    It is best to remove the PROAUDIO directory including all 
  291.         sub-directories first before you install the new version.
  292.  
  293. 4.    Q:    Why does the INSTALL program only allow DMA 1 or 3 to be 
  294.         selected?
  295.     A:    Most existing DOS applications only support DMA 1 and 3.  You 
  296.         can use a text editor such as MS DOS 5.0's EDIT to change the 
  297.         D:x parameter on the MVSOUND.SYS statement in CONFIG.SYS.
  298.  
  299. 5.    Q:    The INSTALL program causes my computer to lock up, or, How do 
  300.         I manually install the software?
  301.     A:    To manually install the PAS16 software on Installation Disks 1
  302.         & 2, do as follows: 
  303.         Add the "C:\PROAUDIO" to the path statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  304.         Reboot the computer.
  305.         MD C:\PROAUDIO
  306.         MD C:\PROAUDIO\MIDI

  330. 6.    Q:    What is MVSOUND.SYS for?
  331.     A:    It enables the PAS16 to produce sound under DOS and is also 
  332.         required for WIN31 drivers.
  333.     
  334. 7.    Q:    After I installed the PAS16 Installation Disks and reboot the 
  335.         computer, right after MVSOUND.SYS finishes loading, I hear 
  336.         crackling/scratchy noises coming out of the speakers.
  337.     A:    Make sure your Installation Disks have the current version of 
  338.         1.2.  Add "T:1" to the end of the MVSOUND.SYS statement.  Save
  339.         CONFIG.SYS and try again.  Refer to page 1-25 of the PAS16 
  340.         User's Guide v1.1 for an explanation.
  341.  
  342. 8.    Q:    What parameters does MVSOUND.SYS support?
  343.     A:    D:x, where x is (0,1,2,3,5,6,7) for DMA for the PAS16 section 
  344.             of the sound card.
  345.         Q:x, where x is (2-7,10-15) for IRQ for the PAS16 section of 
  346.             the sound card.
  347.         J:x, where x is 0 or 1, 1 is for Joystick Enabled (default), 
  348.             0 is for Joystick Disabled.
  349.         V:x, where x is from 1 to 100, which is the initial volume 
  350.             setting.
  351.         T:x, where x is 0 or 1, 1 is to use the on-board oscillator, 
  352.             0 is to use the motherboard's oscillator.  
  353.         Some computers such as 486/33 OPTI have improperly-designed 
  354.         oscillator which causes the OPL3 FM chip on the PAS16 to 
  355.         produce random noises.  See Page 1-25 of the PAS16 User's 
  356.         Guide v1.1 for an explanation.
  357.         Note:  Not all software support high-order DMA and IRQ (for 
  358.         example, TrakBlaster Pro).
  359.  
  360. ***********************************SCSI INTERFACE****************************
  361. 1.    Q:    What is TSLCDR.SYS?
  362.     A:    This is a CD-ROM driver written by Trantor Systems.  It comes 
  363.         with the SCSI/Cable Driver Kit.  The current version is 1.46B.
  364.         The parameters that are supported are:
  365.             D:x, where x is any device name that you assign to the 
  366.                  CD-ROM device.
  367.             R is for reset.
  368.  
  369. 2.    Q:    What is MSCDEX.EXE?
  370.     A:    This is Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions.  The current version is 
  371.         2.21.  The parameters that are supported are:
  372.             D:x, where x is the same device name that is assigned 
  373.                  to the CD-ROM device by TSLCDR.SYS.
  374.             M:x, where x is the number of 2K memory buffers, 10 is
  375.                  usually used.
  376.             L:x, where x is the drive letter you want to assign to
  377.                  the CD-ROM drive.
  378.             V is for a verbose listing of information about memory
  379.                  usage.
  380.             E is for expanded memory usage.
  381.  
  382. 3.    Q:    I don't need the SCSI or audio cable.  Can I just get a copy 
  383.         of TSLCDR.SYS and MSCDEX.EXE?
  384.     A:    These drivers are royalty-bearing software which means they 
  385.         cannot be provided free of charge.  Also, they come with the 
  386.         SCSI/Cable Driver Kit only.
  387.  
  388. 4.    Q:    Which CD-ROM drives can I use with the PAS16?
  389.     A:    See the SUPPORTED CD-ROM DRIVES section above.  The PAS16 has 
  390.         a SCSI interface which allows it to control SCSI devices.  
  391.         Please contact Media Vision Sales for the SCSI CD-ROM 
  392.         Cable/Driver Kit (Specify internal or external).
  393.  
  394. 5.    Q:    Do I have to use the PAS16's SCSI interface to control my 
  395.         CD-ROM drive which has its own controller?
  396.     A:    No.  All that you have to do is to make sure that the CD-Audio
  397.         signals are routed from the CD-ROM drive to the PAS16.  There 
  398.         are 2 ways of doing this.  The first way is to use a custom 
  399.         audio cable to connect the PAS16's internal audio input at J5 
  400.         to the CD-ROM drive.  This custom audio cable is part of the 
  401.         SCSI CD-ROM Cable/Driver Kit and is not available separately.
  402.         If you would like to build this cable, please contact Customer
  403.         Service to request for the cable specification to be faxed to 
  404.         you.  The second way is to use a standard stereo phone 
  405.         extension cable to connect from the PAS16's 1/8" stereo LINE 
  406.         IN to the CD-ROM drive. 
  407.  
  408. 6.    Q:    I already have a SCSI adapter in my system.  Will I have to 
  409.         remove it if I install the PAS16?  Can multimple SCSI adapters
  410.         co-reside in my PC?
  411.     A:    You can have as many SCSI adapters in the same system as there
  412.         are available slots.  The PAS16's SCSI will not interfere with
  413.         other SCSI adapters.  The only possible conflicts would be 
  414.         conflicts with DMAs, IRQs and I/O port used by the sound card.
  415.  
  416. 6.    Q:    I have the Sony CDU-535 CD-ROM drive(or Laser Library).  Can I
  417.         use the PAS16 to control the Sony drive?
  418.     A:    No.  This Sony drive uses a proprietary Sony Bus interface.  
  419.         Media Vision will release the PAS16 and PASPlus Sony Bus 
  420.         version in the near future to work with this drive.  Please 
  421.         contact Customer Service after 8/1 to be added to a waiting 
  422.         list for us to contact you when this version is available.

  424. 7.    Q:    Can I use the PAS16 to control other SCSI devices?
  425.     A:    Yes.  Trantor Systems can be reached at 510-770-1400 for a 
  426.         $59.00 driver set which supports all SCSI hard drives, 
  427.         removable hard drives and magneto-optical drives.  Currently 
  428.         there is no driver support for tape drives or scanners.
  429.  
  430. 8.    Q:    I used to have the original PAS8 board and a SCSI/Cable Driver
  431.         Kit and have just updated to the PAS16.  Do I need an updated 
  432.         version of the CD-ROM drivers?
  433.     A:    Contact Customer Service for a free driver update for both 
  434.         TSLCDR.SYS and MSCDEX.EXE.
  435.  
  436. 9.    Q:    I have the ATI Graphics Ultra (or Vantage) and when the 
  437.         TSLCDR.SYS driver loads it detects two SCSI addresses.  I also
  438.         experience problems with digital audio and get a red screen on
  439.         WIN31.
  440.     A:    Make sure you have TSLCDR.SYS v1.46B or later.
  441.  
  442. 10.    Q:    Which SCSI Interface is used on the PAS16?  How do I write 
  443.         device drivers for it?
  444.     A:    The PAS16 uses the Zilog's Z5380.  Contact Media Vision 
  445.         Customer Service for documentation on the chip's specification
  446.         and the PAS16 Software Developer's Toolkit.  This software 
  447.         toolkit is currently under development.  Customer Service is 
  448.         currently taking a waiting list.
  449.  
  450. 11.    Q:    What is the transfer rate of the PAS16's SCSI interface?
  451.     A:    It has a maximum transfer rate of 690KB/sec.
  452.  
  453. 12.    Q:    I get the error "No SCSI host adapter found".
  454.     A:    First, the SCSI CD-ROM driver is board dependent.  If you would
  455.         like to use the PAS16 to control the CD-ROM drive, you need 
  456.         to use our TSLCDR.SYS driver v1.46B or later; otherwise, if 
  457.         you would like to use another SCSI controller (such as Adaptec
  458.         or Future Domain) to control the CD-ROM drive, you need to use
  459.         its driver (contact the SCSI controller manufacturer for the 
  460.         driver).  Second, check the internal, flat ribbon SCSI cable 
  461.         to make sure it is properly connected to the PAS16.  Third, 
  462.         make sure the red painted edge of the cable is closest to the 
  463.         4-pin connector on the PAS16 at J4.  Fourth, if problem 
  464.         persists, please follow the Standard Troubleshooting Steps 
  465.         described above. 
  466.  
  467. 13.    Q:    I get the error "No devices respond on this SCSI host adapter".
  468.     A:    First, make sure one of the computer's power cables has been 
  469.         connected to the back of the CD-ROM drive.  Second, check the 
  470.         internal flat ribbon SCSI cable to make sure it is properly 
  471.         connected to the back of the CD-ROM drive.  
  472.  
  473. 14.    Q:    I get the error "Device driver not found:  MVCD001.  No valid 
  474.         CD-ROM selected".
  475.     A:    First, if you are using DR DOS 6.0, it is necessary to change 
  476.         the device name for both TSLCDR.SYS and MSCDEX.EXE statements 
  477.         from "MVCD001" to "TSLCD".  Second, make sure that the device 
  478.         name in both of these statements match.
  479.  
  480. 15.    Q:    I get the error "Incorrect DOS version".
  481.     A:    If you are using MS DOS 5.0, MSCDEX.EXE v2.2 requires that 
  482.         CONFIG.SYS has the statement "DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE".  You 
  483.         should not get this error f you have MSCDEX.EXE v2.21.  This 
  484.         driver comes with our SCSI/Cable Driver Kit or can be 
  485.         downloaded from Microsoft Multimedia BBS at 206-936-4082.
  486.  
  487. 16.    Q:    I get the error "Invalid drive specification" when I type the 
  488.         drive letter assigned to the CD-ROM drive.
  489.     A:    First, make sure that you have "LASTDRIVE=X" in the CONFIG.SYS
  490.         file, where X is the next logical drive letter after the 
  491.         letter assigned to the CD-ROM drive in the MSCDEX.EXE 
  492.         statement.  Second, make sure that the TSLCDR.SYS driver 
  493.         statement precedes any driver statement that creates a RAM 
  494.         drive such as RAMDRIVE.SYS.  Third, check if the TSLCDR.SYS
  495.         and MSCDEX.EXE drivers have been loaded up properly.
  496.  
  497. 17.    Q:    I get the error "CDR 101:  Drive not ready".
  498.     A:    First, make sure that you are not trying to read a CD-Audio 
  499.         disk.  Second, check in the internal, flat ribbon SCSI cable 
  500.         to make sure it is properly connected.  Third, move the 
  501.         TSLCDR.SYS and MSCDEX.EXE statements to the end of CONFIG.SYS 
  502.         and AUTOEXEC.BAT.  Having these statements at the beginning 
  503.         can sometimes cause this problem.  Fourth, reduce to the 
  504.         generic CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT and try again.
  505.  
  506. 18.    Q:    I get the error "CDR 103:  CD-ROM not High Sierra or ISO-9660 
  507.         format reading drive X.  Abort, Retry or Ignore?"
  508.     A:    First, check to make sure that you are not trying to read a 
  509.         CD-Audio disk.  Second, this is usually caused by a software 
  510.         conflict.  Reduce to the generic CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT 
  511.         and try again.
  512.  
  513. 19.    Q:    I do not hear any CD-Audio at all, or, How do I connect the 
  514.         internal CD-Audio cable?
  515.     A:    The internal CD-Audio cable may not have been properly 
  516.         connected or it is defective.  There are two ways to route 
  517.         CD-Audio.  The first way is to use a custom audio cable to 
  518.         connect the PAS16's internal audio input at J5 to the CD-ROM 
  519.         drive.  This custom audio cable is part of the SCSI CD-ROM 
  520.         Cable/Driver Kit or included with the PRO16 Kit, and is not
  521.         available separately.  If you would like to build this cable, 
  522.         please contact Customer Service to request for the cable 
  523.         specification to be faxed to you.  The second way is to use a 
  524.         standard stereo phone extension cable to connect from the 
  525.         PAS16's 1/8" stereo LINE IN to the CD-ROM drive. 
  526.  
  527. 20.    Q:    Does the PAS16 support CD-ROM XA?
  528.     A:    No.  This feature may be supported in the future.
  529.

  531. 1.    Q:    Does SFX support 16-bit PCM recording and playback?
  532.     A:    No.  SFX only supports 8 bits.
  533.  
  534. 2.    Q:    Sound loops when playing back under SFX.  DMA 3 and IRQ 7 are
  535.         set in CONFIG.SYS file.  All other applications  work fine.
  536.     A:    First, make sure that the file is not a 16-bit recorded file.
  537.         SFX only supports 8-bit recorded files.  Second, try using a 
  538.         high-order DMA, such as DMA 5.
  539.  
  540. 3.    Q:    Activating "Record" in SFX disconnects the channels.
  541.     A:    This problem has been reported to Engineering.
  542.

  544. 1.    Q:    TAPIMV issues the error "FM sound card not found."
  545.     A:    Make sure your Installation Disks have the current version of 
  546.         1.2.  Add "T:1" to the end of the MVSOUND.SYS statement.  
  547.         Refer to page 1-25 of the PAS16 User's Guide v1.1 for an 
  548.         explanation.
  549.  
  550. 2.    Q:    I have the Media Vision MIDI Mate v1.0 (MIDI connector box) 
  551.         which worked fine on the PAS8.  After I upgraded to the PAS16,
  552.         MIDI IN does not work using the same MIDI Mate.
  553.     A:    Inside MIDI Mate, there is a chip at U1 (next to the MIDI 
  554.         cable) called an opto-isolator.  The old part number is 6N136.
  555.         For the MIDI Mate to work with the PAS16, it needs the new part
  556.         number which is 6N138.  Contact Customer Service for an RMA 
  557.         number to have this chip updated if you have the old part 
  558.         number.
  559.  
  560. 3.    Q:    The FMEDIT section in the PAS 16 User's Guide has missing 
  561.         pages to describe the Mixer, Display Setup, Trigger Note, 
  562.         Quitting, and Pop-up Windows.
  563.     A:    Please contact Customer Service for a copy of this sent by 
  564.         mail.
  565.  
  566. 4.    Q:    I don't hear any sound when I play a .ROL or .MID in SP 
  567.         Spectrum.
  568.     A:    Make sure that Port is set to 2 for playing songs using the 
  569.         internal FM synthesizer.  Set Port to 1 for playing out of an 
  570.         external MIDI equipment.  Refer to the SP Spectrum section in 
  571.         the PAS16 User's Guide for additional information.
  572.  
  573. 5.    Q:    I get the error "Run time error.  Divide by 0" when I run SP 
  574.         Spectrum.
  575.     A:    This is caused by an incorrect setup of the memory manager, 
  576.         commonly seen in QEMM and Wytek co-processor in 486 machines.
  577.         Contact Quarterdeck or the manufacturer of the memory manager
  578.         for assistance with reconfiguration.
  579.

  581. 1.    Q:    While running TBPRO, a MOD file plays for 20 seconds then 
  582.         abruptly stops and system hangs up.
  583.     A:    This is caused by a DMA conflict.  Make sure the PAS16 section
  584.         is not set for DMA 1 unless the SB compatiblity has been 
  585.         disabled.
  586.  
  587. 2.    Q:    Does TBPRO support high-order DMA and IRQ?
  588.     A:    No.  TBPRO only supports DMA 1,3 and IRQ 2,3,5,7.
  589.  
  590. ***********************************MONOLOGUE*********************************
  591. 1.    Q:    Running Monologue causes my computer to lock up.
  592.     A:    Monologue uses the SB section of the sound card.  Monologue 
  593.         defaults to IRQ 7 where as the SB section of the sound card 
  594.         (at J12) defaults to IRQ 5.  To change Monologue's IRQ setting
  595.         to match the card's setting, run Monologue's INSTALL.  Press 
  596.         [F2] to select a sound accessory.  Select the "Media Vision 
  597.         Products" driver and press [Enter].  Use the TAB key to 
  598.         highlight the IRQ settings.  Then use the up arrow key to 
  599.         select IRQ 5 (or which ever IRQ is selected at J12).  Press 
  600.         [Enter] when done.  Press [F5] to install Monologue to the 
  601.         hard drive.  Press [F9] when finished.
  602.  
  603. 2.    Q:    All possible SB's IRQs at J12 have been tried and Monologue 
  604.         still locks up or does not produce any audio.
  605.     A:    Select the "AdLib" driver instead of "Media Vision Products" 
  606.         and try again.
  607.  
  608. 3.    Q:    Dr. DOS 6.0's memory manager causes Monologue to lock up the 
  609.         computer when using ALT-T to activate Monologue.
  610.     A:    First, run MEMMAX -U to disable upper memory.  Second, run 
  611.         Monologue.  Third, run MEMMAX +U to re-enable upper memory.
  612.  
  613. 4.    Q.    The TALKDRVR.SYS is missing from the Monologue v3.0 For DOS 
  614.         disk.
  615.     A:    This driver was provided with Monologue v2.0 and has been 
  616.         removed from the disk for v3.0 by the software manufacturer 
  617.         (First Byte).
  618.  
  619. 5.    Q:    The Monologue User's Guide indicates that there should be two
  620.         5 1/4" disks.
  621.     A:    There is only one 5 1/4" disk.
  622.  
  623. 6.    Q:    The "Alt-T" key combination does not work.
  624.     A:    Some programs like WordPerfect or WordStar also use the same 
  625.         key combination which will create a conflict with Monologue.
  626.         To resolve this problem, you need to assign a new hot key 
  627.         combination.  Go into the Monologue directory.  Run CONFIG.BAT.
  628.         Select "Set speech and Display Parameters".  From the Info 
  629.         Screen, select "Skip".  Hit Tab and save this.  Back at the 
  630.         Main menu, select "Change Hot Key Assignment".  Choose a new
  631.         Alt key combination that will not conflict with the program 
  632.         you wish to configure Monologue for.
  633.  
  634. 7.    Q:    Monologue's "Alt-T" key combination does not work properly.
  635.         Sometimes it does and sometimes strange things happen.
  636.     A:    First, delete the Monologue directory completely.  Re-install
  637.         Monologue and then try again.
  638.  
  639. 8.    Q:    When I run "SAYFILE filename.doc" at the DOS prompt nothing 
  640.         happens.
  641.     A:    SAYFILE.BAT is missing a parameter to allow a DOC filename to
  642.         be passed to the SAYF.EXE so that it can speak the file.  
  643.         Modify SAYFILE.BAT by changing the third line from "SAYF" to 
  644.         "SAYF %1" and then try again.  Run "SAYFILE filename.doc".  
  645.         Press Enter.  Then a graphical screen will display.  Press 
  646.         Enter again and the file will be spoken.

  649. 1.    Q:    I am having trouble running Animator Pro with Audiomate.

  655. 1.    Q:    Lotus 1-2-3 with Multimedia Help requires 4MB virtual memory 
  656.         to run under WIN31.  WIN31 crashes when Lotus is initialized.
  657.     A:    Go to the Control Panel.  Select 386 Enhanced.  Select Virtual
  658.         memory.  At default, virtual memory size is set to 0KB and 
  659.         Type is Temporary.  Select Change.  Click on the down arrow in
  660.         the Type field and select Permanent.  Click on OK, and answer
  661.         YES to all the prompts.  Restart WIN31 and try again.
  662.  
  663. ***********************WINDOWS DRIVERS AND POCKET TOOLS**********************
  664. The Windows Drivers disk uses InstallSHIELD v1.3 by The Stirling Group. 
  665.  
  666. 1.    Q:    What do I need to do before I install the PAS16 Windows Drivers
  667.         disk?
  668.     A:    If you have the PAS8 Windows drivers installed or have an older
  669.         version of PAS16 drivers,  go into the Control Panel, Drivers,
  670.         and remove every driver which references Pro AudioSpectrum or 
  671.         Media Vision.  Restart WIN31 and then install the new drivers.
  672.  
  673.         Or, if you have Norton Desktop For Windows which will 
  674.         interfere with our Windows Driver's INSTALL program.  To work 
  675.         around the problem, go into SYSTEM.INI, [boot] section.  
  676.         Replace "SHELL=NDW.EXE" with "SHELL=PROGMAN.EXE".  Install the
  677.         Windows drivers, restart WIN31, and make sure that all sounds
  678.         work.  Replace the "PROGMAN" by "NDW" in SYSTEM.INI.  Restart 
  679.         WIN31.  Go into Program Manager, File, Run to execute 
  680.         "SETUP /P" so that Norton will register the Multimedia Tools 
  681.         Group which has just been created by the INSTALL program.
  682.  
  683.         Or, if you are using DR DOS 6.0's SHARE which causes our 
  684.         INSTALL program to crash the system.  To work around the 
  685.         problem, remove SHARE.  Re-boot the computer.  Then install 
  686.         our Windows drivers.
  687.  
  688. 2.    Q:    While installing the PAS16 WIN31 drivers, I get the error "You
  689.         must first load Multimedia Extensions."
  690.     A:    First, go into the Control Panel, Drivers applet to check the 
  691.         installed drivers list.  There must be MIDI Mapper, Timer, 
  692.         [MCI] Sound, [MCI] MIDI Sequencer.  Second, check the 
  693.         SYSTEM.INI file.  Under the [boot] section, there should be 
  694.         "DRIVERS=MMSYSTEM.DLL".  If any of these items are missing, 
  695.         WIN31 has not been properly installed.  Installing WIN31 over 
  696.         an older version of windows may have caused this problem.  The
  697.         only solution is to install WIN31 from scratch and then install
  698.         the PAS16 WIN31 drivers again.
  699.  
  700. 3.    Q:    After the PAS16 Windows drivers installation, starting WIN31 
  701.         causes the error "Can't find ver. 2.00 of VDMAD.386."
  702.     A:    Some Windows applications replace this driver by their own DMA
  703.         driver, such as Norton tape backup software which puts under 
  704.         the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI, the statement 
  705.         "DEVICE=VDMADX.386".  First, put a semi-colon ";" infront of
  706.         the whole statement.  Second, add the statement "DEVICE=*VDMAD"
  707.         to the beginning of the [386Enh] section.  Restart WIN31 and 
  708.         try again.
  709.  
  710. 4.    Q:    Do I need MVSOUND.SYS for Windows?
  711.     A:    Currently, yes.  In the future, the PAS16's Windows drivers 
  712.         will not have to depend on MVSOUND.SYS.
  713.  
  714. 5.    Q:    Can I use different IRQ and DMA settings under Windows, than 
  715.         under DOS?
  716.     A:    The DMA set in SYSTEM.INI for Windows can be different from 
  717.         the DMA set in CONFIG.SYS for DOS as long as WIN31 is started 
  718.         in 386-Enhanced mode.  However , if you start WIN31 is started
  719.         in standard mode, you make make the settings the same.
  720.  
  721. 6.    Q:    What is the advantage of using a high-order DMA and IRQ?
  722.     A:    High-order DMA allows 16-bit DMA transfer which enables the 
  723.         MVPROAUD.DRV sound driver to handle digital audio more 
  724.         efficiently and also to provide more available DMA selections.
  725.         High-order IRQ only provides more available IRQ selections.
  726.  
  727. 7.    Q:    I have just received the latest version of the PAS16 Windows 
  728.         Drivers disk.  Do I have to remove the older version first?
  729.     A:    Yes.      
  730.  
  731. 8.    Q:    Sound plays normally under DOS using the selected DMA and IRQ 
  732.         setttings, but loops under Windows using the same DMA and IRQ 
  733.         settings.
  734.     A:    This is caused by an IRQ conflict.  Edit the SYSTEM.INI file 
  735.         to change the IRQ setting under [mvproaud.drv] section.
  736.  
  737. 9.    Q:    Pro Mixer's wave meter points at the beginning of the red area
  738.         instead of at zero.
  739.     A:    Our future release of WIN31 drivers v1.4 will correct this 
  740.         problem.  Please check with Customer Service after 8/1.
  741.  
  742. 10.    Q:    What do I have to do before I can record using Pocket Recorder
  743.         or Sound Recorder?
  744.     A:    Go into Pro Mixer or Pocket Mixer to set the audio input source
  745.         to recording mode.
  746.  
  747. 11.    Q:    When I record at 16-bit mode, there is very bad clipping or it
  748.         does not work at all.  8-bit recording works fine.
  749.     A:    If you are using an low-order DMA then change to a 16-bit DMA 
  750.         under the [mvproaud.drv] section of SYSTEM.INI and try again.
  751.  
  752. 12.    Q:    Recording at 8-bit is very scratchy.  16-bit recording does not
  753.         have this problem.
  754.     A:    The PAS16 has a 16-bit PCM DAC.  Recording at 8-bit using a 
  755.         16-bit DAC is definitely more noisy than recording at 8-bit on
  756.         the PAS8 which only has an 8-bit DAC.  In the next release, 
  757.         Pocket recorder will have a feature to convert a 16-bit 
  758.         recorded file to 8-bit to resolve the problem.  Please check 
  759.         with Customer Service after 8/1 to find out if WIN31 Drivers 
  760.         and Pocket Tools v1.4 is available which will have this 
  761.         feature.
  762.  
  763. 13.    Q:    Does the Pocket Recorder support the Cut, Copy and Paste 
  764.         features?
  765.     A:    These features will be supported in the next release.  Please 
  766.         check with Customer Service after 8/1 to find out if WIN31 
  767.         Drivers and Pocket Tools v1.4 is available.
  768.  
  769. 14.    Q:    I get the errors "Can't find input device with pid." and "Can't
  770.         find output device with pid." when trying to run Pocket 
  771.         Recorder.
  772.     A:    Make sure the MVSOUND.SYS statement appears in CONFIG.SYS and 
  773.         that the driver loads properly when the computer boots up.  
  774.  
  775. 15.    Q:    I get the error "PREC has caused a General Protection Fault 
  776.         error in USER.EXE..."
  777.     A:    This error occurs most frequently in 286 computers and also in
  778.         faster computers which have less than 2MB of virtual memory 
  779.         under Windows.  To help us troubleshoot this problem, first, 
  780.         please download PRECGPF.ZIP (PREC.EXE with GPF error checking)
  781.         from the BBS.  Second, run DRWATSON.EXE (a WIN31 utility).  
  782.         Third, run the new Pocket Recorder.  When WIN31 issues the GPE,
  783.         all the necessary information are stored in DRWATSON.LOG.  
  784.         Fourth, print out this log and fax it to Technical Support.
  785.         Upon receiving the information, we will forward to Engineering
  786.         and await their response.
  787.  
  788. 16.    Q:    If Pocket Recorder is used to record a 16-bit wav file, and is
  789.         saved then played from Media Player, the file will play 
  790.         properly to the end but the thumb button on the position slider
  791.         will not have eached the end.  The thumb button usually stops 
  792.         around the halfway mark.  If the position button is dragged to
  793.         the right of this mark, the message "The specified parameter is
  794.         out of range for the specified command" will pop up.  Dragging 
  795.         past the halfway mark and playing the file sometimes results 
  796.         in white noise.
  797.     A:    This problem has been reported to Engineering and will be fixed
  798.         in the future release of WIN31 Drivers v1.4.  Please contact 
  799.         Customer Service after 8/1 to find out if this is available.
  800.  
  801. 17.    Q:    While recording under Pocket Recorder, if I open/close/use 
  802.         other applications, there are clicking/popping sounds that also
  803.         get recorded.
  804.     A:    This problem has been reported to Engineering and is currently
  805.         being researched.
  806.  
  807. 18.    Q:    Pocket Recorder's OLE (Object Linking & Embedding) does not 
  808.         work properly.
  809.     A:    The OLE feature is not fully implemented.  Please document the
  810.         problems in detail and fax or mail to Technical Support to be 
  811.         forwarded to Engineering.
  812.  
  813. 19.    Q:    A file recorded using RECFILE.EXE (PAS16's DOS utility) plays 
  814.         back fine under Pocket Recorder but this same file will not 
  815.         play back under Media Player.  And under Sound Recorder, 
  816.         loading this file will cause the "General Protection Fault 
  817.         Error In Sound Recorder".
  818.     A:    A new version of RECFILE.EXE, dated 6-22-92 or later, does not
  819.         have this problem.  On BBS, download P16REC.ZIP; on Compuserve,
  820.          download TOOLS.ZIP.
  821.  
  822. 20.    Q:    How do I play CD-Audio under WIN31?
  823.     A:    First, put a CD-Audio disk into the CD-ROM drive.  Failure to 
  824.         do this will cause the [MCI] CD-Audio driver to not install 
  825.         properly  Second, go into the Control Panel, Drivers.  Click on
  826.         the Add button.  Select "[MCI] CD-Audio" driver.  Click on the 
  827.         OK button.  WIN31 will prompt you for the Microsoft Windows 
  828.         Disk 4.  Third, after this driver has been properly installed,
  829.         go into Media Player.  Select Device.  CD-Audio should be one 
  830.         of the choices for you to select from.  If  not, edit 
  831.         MPLAYER.INI to change "CDAUDIO=0," to "CDAUDIO=17, CDAUDIO".
  832.  
  833. 21.    Q:    I do not get any FM sound when I run DOS games under the DOS 
  834.         shell of Windows.
  835.     A:    The OPL3 FM synthesizer chip on the PAS16 can operate in either
  836.         OPL3 (4-operator) mode or 3812 (2-operator) mode.  Under 
  837.         Windows, Voyetra's OPL3.DRV driver puts this FM chip into the 
  838.         OPL3 mode to produce rich FM sounds.  However, existing games 
  839.         only support the 3812 mode.  This driver will put the OPL3 
  840.         chip back in 3812 mode upon exiting WIN31 to go back to DOS.
  841.         However, wihle still under Windows, if the user attempts to run
  842.         a DOS game or application which supports AdLib, FM sound will
  843.         not play.  To work around this problem, go into SYSTEM.INI, 
  844.         [drivers] section, change MIDI=OPL3.DRV to become 
  845.         MIDI=MVFM.DRV.  Then restart Windows.  Go into the Control 
  846.         Panel, MIDI Mapper.  Click on New.  Give it a name like "3812 
  847.         mode".  Under the Port Name column, select "Media Vision FM 
  848.         Synth" for channels 1-10 and 13-16 and then save the setup. 
  849.         Now DOS games and applications can produce FM sounds.
  850.  
  851. 22.    Q:    Under Media Player, CANYON.MID plays properly but when I play 
  852.         other MIDI files, I don't hear any music.
  853.     A:    WIN31 only supports General MIDI.  The MIDI files that you have
  854.         may be Non-General MIDI.  Try the following.  Go into Control 
  855.         Panel, MIDI Mapper.  Select the Pro AudioSpectrum setup.  Click
  856.         on Edit.  Under the Port Name column, select "Media Vision FM 
  857.         Synth" for channels 1-10 and 13-16 and then save the setup.

  912. 1.    Q:    After running Compton's Multimedia Encyclopedia, I only hear 
  913.         sounds out of one channel.
  914.     A:    When Compton's plays digital audio (represented by .WAV file 
  915.         extension), it puts the CD-ROM drive into mono mode and also 
  916.         shuts down one channel.  For a temporary solution, you need 
  917.         to do a cold boot to reset the CD-ROM drive.  To resolve this 
  918.         problem, download COMPTONS.ZIP from the BBS or contact Customer
  919.         Service to have this file sent via mail.

  921. 2.    Q:    While installing MS Bookshelf, at 99% completion, installation
  922.         aborts with an error message in SETUP.INF file.
  923.     A:    First, back up SETUP.INF.  Second, go into SETUP.INF and remove

  925.         re-install Bookshelf

  927. 3.    Q:    National Geographic Society's Presidents Starting With George 
  928.         runs fine but does not produce audio.
  929.     A:    This application supports SB.  During installation, the driver
  930.         statement "DEVICE=SNDBK12.SYS 1" gets added to CONFIG.SYS.  
  931.         This driver defaults to IRQ 7 and I/O port 220h and DMA 1.  
  932.         The SB section of the sound card defaults to IRQ 5 and I/O port
  933.         220h.  Edit the CONFIG.SYS to show 
  934.         "DEVICE=SNDBK12.SYS 1 5 220", where 5 is for IRQ 5 and 220 is 
  935.         for I/O port 220h, or which ever settings you have at J10 and 
  936.         J12 on the sound card.

  939. All SB games use DMA1, an IRQ and an I/O port.

  941. Some SB games look for the following statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT:
  942.     "SET BLASTER=A220 Q5 D1 T3", where
  943. A220 is for I/O port 220h, or which ever I/O port is selected at J10.
  944. Q5 is IRQ 5, or which ever IRQ is selected at J12.
  945. D1 is for DMA 1 which is required for SB compatibility.
  946. Try with T2 or T3 for timer.

  948. Other SB games do not look for this statement to find the settings but allow 
  949. you to set the settings via an install program or by modifying a configuration
  950. file.

  952. A few games default to certain settings and do not allow the user to change 
  953. these settings to match the board settings.

  955. Make sure that the game's settings match with the settings used by the SB 
  956. section of the sound card.  At default, the SB section uses IRQ 5, I/O 220h.
  957. Refer to the game's user guide or contact the game manufacturer for assistance.

  959. Some games do not work properly if the computer is running in TURBO mode.  On 
  960. most computers, there is a TURBO button on the front.  If this button is not 
  961. found, disabling the internal/external memory cache in the computer's CMOS 
  962. setup achieves the same result.

  964. 1.    Q:    The joystick does not work at all or does not work properly 
  965.         when using the PAS16's joystick port.
  966.     A:    First,  some computers have a built-in joystick port on the 
  967.         motherboard.  Other computers have a multi-I/O board that has 
  968.         a joystick port.  Make sure that only one joystick port is 
  969.         enabled and the other one is disabled.  Second, if the computer
  970.         is too fast that may also cause a problem.  Reduce the 
  971.         computer's  BUS  (I/O CLK) speed and try again.  Refer to your
  972.         computer's user's guide for instructions on how to adjust the
  973.         BUS (I/O CLK) speed.  Third, contact the game manufacturer to 
  974.         ask for a joystick driver that works on fast machines.

  976. 2.    Q:    I do not get any sound effects and/or music while running 
  977.         games, or, 
  978.         The sounds produced by the games are very faint.
  979.     A:    Run "PAS RESET" and then try running the games again.

  988. 4.    Q:     Links, The Golf Game, by Access, causes my computer to lock up.
  989.     A:    Links defaults to IRQ 3 and I/O 220.  And the PAS16 defaults to
  990.         IRQ5 and I/O 220.  Run SETBLAST.EXE  (which  came with Links) 
  991.         to change the defaults used by Links to match whichever 
  992.         settings used by the PAS16.

  994. 5.    Q:    Wing Commander II, by Origin, causes my computer to lock up or
  995.         does not produce any digital audio.
  996.     A:    First, make sure you have enabled speech in the WC II's 
  997.         INSTALL.EXE program.  Second, make sure you have expanded 
  998.         memory.  Third, if you use QEMM 6.0,  the "Stealth" option may
  999.         distort sounds and lock up the computer.  Fourth, check the 
  1000.         WC II's  WC2.CFG file.  At default, this file contains 
  1001.         "v  a904 c27", where  "c" indicates Sound  Blaster driver, 
  1002.         "2" indicates I/O 220, and "7" indicates IRQ 7.   Change these
  1003.         two digits to match the SB settings on the PAS16. 
  1004.     
  1005. 6.    Q:    Falcon 3.0, by Spectrum Holobyte, does not play any radio voice
  1006.         messages and produces popping sounds.
  1007.     A:    Try running the computer in non-TURBO mode or by disabling the 
  1008.         internal/external memory cache.  If the problem persists,

  1045. 12.    Q:    Ultima Underworld does not produce any digital audio.  Music

  1049.         Underworld, to select the IRQ setting to match with the PAS16's

  1052. 13.    Q:    I am having trouble running Interplay's Star Trek: The 25th 
  1053.         Anniversary.  Can't select the Pro AudioSpectrum from the sound

  1055.     A:    The Pro AudioSpectrum option is for the PAS8.  The PAS8 uses a 
  1056.         2-operator FM synthesizer chip, and the PAS16 uses a 4-operator
  1057.         FM synthesizer.  The AdLib or SB sound options should work 
  1058.         fine.

  1060. 14.    Q:    After exiting Windows 3.1 and running Sierra's Mixed-Up Mother
  1061.         Goose, FM sounds are faint.  Cranking up volume helps but 
  1062.         exposes background noise.
  1063.     A:    The PAS16's VPASD.386 driver will be updated to resolve this 
  1064.         problem.

  1066. 15.    Q:    I am having trouble running Microprose's Gunship 2000.
  1067.     A:    Microprose has developed new sound drivers which can be 
  1068.         downloaded from our BBS.  The file name is GUNSHIP.ZIP which 
  1069.         contains different driver files for different IRQ settings.  
  1070.         During GS2000's setup routine, select the AdLib driver.  
  1071.         Select the correct driver from this zip file to match with the
  1072.         IRQ setting set by MVSOUND.SYS.  The drivers assume DMA 3 on 
  1073.         the PAS16 and PASPlus and DMA 1 on all other cards.

  1075. 16.    Q:    I am having trouble running Kings Quest V on CD.  Music plays 
  1076.         fine but there is no speech.
  1077.     A:    First, try "PAS RESET".  Second, make sure that the SB driver 
  1078.         has been selected.  Third, make sure that the CD-ROM drivers 
  1079.         have been properly loaded and that the CD-ROM drive is 
  1080.         responding since KQ5 needs to access the CD-ROM drive to play 
  1081.         speech.

  1083. 17.    Q:    I am having trouble running Microprose's F1-17.  Sounds play 
  1084.         at the wrong speed.
  1085.     A:    This game plays FM synthesized audio.  Make sure your 
  1086.         Installation Disks have the current version of 1.2.  Add "T:1"
  1087.         to the end of the MVSOUND.SYS statement.  Refer to page 1-25 of

  1103.         experiment to find the best ratio.  We discovered this from 
  1104.         using the Adaptec 1542B SCSI Hard Disk Controller.  The install
  1105.         program for this card adds the following statements to
